The Common App essay that got me into Cornell

Recently, I was accepted into the College of Engineering of Cornell university through early decision. I have always wanted to make a college admission decision reaction video but since I got into ED and have only one reaction, I, unfortunately, won't be able to do that. So instead, I'll be sharing my essay with my readers. * * * I'm looking at my scrabble rack and I notice WATCH : Double word, 37 points. Not bad, I think, as I'm slowly taken back to a memory… I'm in my school's auditorium in a brand-new uniform, surrounded by other girls wearing the same uniform. I zone out but snap back into reality when I hear my principal's voice, "Watch and learn. This should be the rule you follow every day while you're here. Watch and learn from anyone and everyone, and you'll be able to thrive here." As the nervous new girl I am, I take this to my heart and decide to live by it. I am here to Watch, Learn, and… FOLLOW. Almost a bingo. Oh! And I can p...

Productivity II: Minute and day rules

My first article about productivity was about apps and websites that'll help us be more productive. However, this one will focus on some time-related productivity rules we can follow. 2-minute rule I When we start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to complete. This way, it's easier for us to stick to that habit. Most of the time, when we start a habit we tend to give up after not even a week because they're too complex to stick to or because we keep forgetting them. If we create a habit that we can complete effortlessly, we'll be more likely to stick to it. Furthermore, we can always add more parts to the habit later. 2-minute rule II If a task can be completed in 2 minutes or less, we should go ahead and do it when we think of it. An extension to this rule is to set aside a time (around 30 minutes) to do all the tasks that take 2 minutes (such as replying to an email or doing our laundry). This way, we will stop procrastinating on these smaller ta...

Building a second brain with Zettelkasten

"The brain is for having ideas, not for storing them." But where do you store these ideas? I'm sure we all know and understand the difficulty of memorizing information (Of course, if you're in an academic setting and have to memorize these, you won't have a choice either). But is that really necessary?  This is where the concept of a second brain comes in. While your own physical brain is for having ideas, this "second brain" is for storing them systematically. You can not only store ideas but also slowly build them up, add additional information and create links between ideas in this second brain. While you can have a paper-based second brain, updating it can be tedious, complicated, and sometimes even impossible. While the original Zettelkasten(we will get to what that is later) WAS actually paper-based, most people nowadays, myself included, prefer an online second brain, where you can store, update and find information quickly. One of the most famous...

Poetry II

Steady and Free I put myself behind the bars Of validation, and norms I lost myself in the mask Of facade, and pretense I take it off. I break the bars. And run, far, far away I feel them, being thrown at me Fresh and burning, thrown at me Oh! It’s too much My eyes can’t breathe My heart can’t see But I don't yield, and then slowly It all fades away Nothing, solitude, freedom “They have left me” I take a step forward Steady and free  -19/07/2022 (18 y/o) * * * Ever again As heaven’s blessings graze the dirt The world beyond fades away Behind the wet crystals And the feel of the wind And the mist of the milky sky Ah! the prayers have been heard But then….destruction Maybe….it’s a curse To have a blessing given So suddenly, intensely, so cruelly So much that no one can hold Will we ever know? As the wind howls And the sky growls His tears stream Shivers, Trembles Screams and cries But then Peace As if nothing happened Monster, we say, never again And yet  We want again...

Historical places in Sri Lanka: what people don't know

We all have heard of Ruwanwelisaya, the temple of the sacred tooth, and Adam’s Peak. But have you heard about Isurumuniya and Kitulgala? Today we’ll be talking about some historical places in Sri Lanka that most people don’t know, but are amazing nevertheless. Kitulgala Belilena (cave) First up, we have the Kitulgala Belilena. This is famous for being the residence of prehistoric humans in Sri Lanka. Many pieces of evidence of human life such as skeletons and remnants of edible plants and animals. The cave is said to belong to the lowland wet zone. Twelve skeletons were found in this cave, and it was found that these were of the Balangoda Man ( homo sapiens balangodensis ). Furthermore, evidence has been found that these humans baked and ate seeds of “wild breadfruit”. And the remnants of lagoon oysters mixed with salt from coastal areas have been discovered as well.  The amount of evidence this place gives for archeologists to discover the truth about human existence thous...

Chocolate and vanilla layered pudding

So my aunt loved to collect recipe magazines. There is one Sinhala magazine she always used to read. And when she left for Australia she asked me to collect them and kee them with me until she came back. So since I was curious, I decided to get two copies the first time: one for her and one for myself. And I was HOOKED. These magazines had so many simple but unique recipes. Since they were written by Sri Lankans, most ingredients were available and affordable as well. SO I decided to keep buying these magazines for myself as well. And today, I will be sharing a recipe from one of those magazines. The chocolate and vanilla layered pudding is a bit harder to make, compared to let’s say…cakes and brownies. But of course, that is expected since it's a pudding. I love this recipe because it requires a small number of ingredients and is very VERY tasty. So let's see what it is. Ingredients: Biscuit layer 20-25 biscuits of your choice (it is better if they are not TOO sweet) 2 or 3 ...
